The key to achieving the “perfect look” is not the newest or the most expensive makeup product — it’s how you take care of your skin before any makeup even gets applied.
If you’ve ever dealt with the annoying issues of flaky skin, cakey foundation, or the appearance of lines through your makeup, you may want to try the 4-step pre makeup skincare routine that we recommend below. By following this routine on a regular basis, your skin will always be ready for a flawless makeup look!
1. Cleanse
Using a soft and gentle cleanser, wash your face for 60 seconds with lukewarm water. Rinse and repeat this step to rid your skin of every bit of dirt, bacteria, and excess oil — the first cleanse gets rid of the surface grime, while the second reaches into your pores to deep clean and make your skin smooth.
If your skin is sensitive, be sure to keep away from foaming cleansers, as they tend to strip away too much of your skin’s natural oils and leave your skin feeling dry and sensitive. Choose a non-foaming gel cleanser instead to make sure your skin remains supple and strong after cleansing.
2. Exfoliate
The main culprit for cakey-looking skin after applying foundation is an excess of dead skin cells. If you want to avoid this beauty disaster, regular exfoliation is key.
When choosing the right exfoliator to do the job, look for a gentle exfoliating scrub that also contains nourishing ingredients that will leave your skin smooth and naturally glowing.
A common issue with exfoliating is over-exfoliating, which is when someone exfoliates too frequently, which causes tears in the skin and thus excessively dry skin. Limit your exfoliation to just 1-2 times per week to avoid this issue.
3. Moisturize
This step is non-negotiable if you want skin that's smooth, supple, and ready for makeup. Regardless of whether your skin is oily or dry, you must apply a moisturizer before applying makeup if you want to reduce the appearance of lines and flakey skin.
Make sure you use a moisturizer that suits your skin needs and offers all-day hydration. If you have sensitive skin, use a fragrance free moisturizer, or if you have extra dry skin, use a cream that is thicker to get a more dewy right-out-of-the-shower look.
Be sure to apply your moisturizer under the eye area, as the skin under your eye is more delicate and prone to wrinkles and therefore requires extra hydration in order to prevent or reduce the appearance of lines
4. SPF
Applying SPF right after cleansing will render the rest of your products useless, but putting it on at the end of this skincare regimen will allow all of the products to work to their full potential.
Once you’ve followed all of these steps, your skin is now ready to go for a full face of makeup! And remember: this skincare routine is not meant to do only on the days when you decide to apply makeup. If you’re serious about achieving the “perfect look” for makeup days, then you’ll want to make this skincare regimen a regular part of your routine!
